Jerez de la Frontera (in former times also known as Xerez or Xeres) is a city and municipality in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It has 191.002 inhabitants (January 2003), being the 5th city in Andalusia in population terms.
It is where sherry originated and it is one of the original centres of Flamenco. Frontera refers to its location formerly being on the frontier, or border, between the Moorish and Christian regions of Spain.
It is the home of the Xerez Club Deportivo football team.
Jerez is also home to the motorsport race circuit Circuito Permanente de Jerez home of the annual Motorcycling Grand Prix and a paramount destination for the Formula One teams for off-season testing. It also hosted the Highly controversial 1997 European Grand Prix.
